Slate stones are formed from the low grade metamorphism of mud and stone sediment. These stones are naturally found inside the earth’s surface in many parts of the world. India, China, Africa, Brazil USA and Italy are good exporters and suppliers of slate stones in the world in form of slate stone slabs, slate stone tiles, natural slate flooring etc.
Indian slate floor tiles are growing to be one of the most preferred floor tiles for residential and commercial purposes. The beautiful colors, charming patterns and attractive designs make it a very popular stone to be used widely in making ornaments and decorative pieces. Slate stones tiles and slabs are exclusively used for flooring thus providing elegance, charm and beauty to the houses.
Slate stones are metamorphic rocks having the remarkable properties of impermeability, hardness, quick drying, frost resistance, minutely grained and fissile showing varying degree or level of metamorphosis. These slates can be cut into slices with thickness ranging from 8 to 14 mm. for commercial uses.
Slate is minutely grained, uniform sedimentary rock with different layers made up of clay and mica group minerals. The re may be the presence of oxides, calcites, quartz and feldspar in different proportion in the slate stones. These impurities as well as the duration of sedimentation and hardening of slates determine the hardness, tensility, absorbency and resistance to abrasion.
One can also watch out the properties of slate stones with the different colors like black, green or mottled.

Slate Stone - Chemical & Physical Properties
Slate is a fine-grained, homogeneous, sedimentary, multilayered rock composed of clay and mica group minerals. It may contain oxides, calcites, quartz and feldspar in varying amounts. The hardness, tensility, absorbency and abrasion resistance differ from slate to slate due to the process of hardening and formation they have undergone and the relative amount of matters they consist of. The main discerning feature of slate stones are the colour which may be black, green or mottled. Color of slate stones gives considerable idea of the properties of the stone.
